Response on Marina Mahathir's statement

What is so serious when our young generation especially our young females take part in fighting for their rights? What is the problem when they didn’t get full support from ‘intellectuals’ or even from Special Advisor on Women? When more than half of Malaysian Muslims have spoken for them?

What is a big deal when other ‘intellectuals’ are keep on condemning the ‘small-mind wannabe’ and so what with the nomination of the title ‘small-mind of the year’? Come on young ladies, let them say what they would like to say, and you keep up your good work!

In the view of muslimah and also as a student, I’m so disappointed with the statement made by Marina Mahathir in her column -Musings;Marina Mahathir ( The Star; Wed, June 4 2008). By the way, in some certain parts, I may consider it as acceptable when it comes to the different ways of thinking and the important of defending it in order to insist it to be the best way from other’s but I also wonder if she would have completed her research before her view is published to public.

Why must we compare our local students with students in France? Yes, they fight for a better education system, and yet, is protecting women’s pride a ‘small mind’? As a student, didn’t they have the rights to protect themselves for what is permissible in Islam? For something that is compulsory in the real Islamic perspectives? Is it really small when it comes to ‘religion’? Are there any powerful sources for us as a muslim that can be compared to Al-Quran? Definitely no!

The idea to change the school’s uniform color may be silly but yet they also have included few other alternatives that can be stressed on. Why don’t we focus on that? The ministry for example may come out with a new dress code in order to reduce the transparent of white color for the school uniforms; it is compulsory for all students to wear camisole, and it is compulsory for all Muslim female students to wear tudung - for example!

After all, Marina has portrayed herself on such ways, on the same level with the female students association (as what she thought; if they really are) when she simply mentioned that ‘ voicing out our rights’ is small-minded and is one of the reason why student cannot get jobs after studying. ‘The easiest and cheapest counter attack (freedom of speech arguments)’ that she stressed on is actually ‘eating’ her back as she also used the same method to deliver her views!

Marina would definitely has not yet completed her researches regarding the evident that she is looking for when almost all Islamic movements and NGOs agreed with the statements made by The National Union of Malaysia Muslim Student, PKPIM few weeks back. TV3 and RTM have also done with the surveys regarding this issue and 67% of Malaysian agreed! A new portal of Islamic Community, I Luv Islam.com has also pasted a poll entitled “Adakah Pakaian Pelajar Perempuan Sekolah Seksi” on the website and 63% of the viewers agreed. Dear Muslims, please watch over your responsibility towards ummah. If you would have seated and do nothing for the sake of your religion, who else then? If you would have felt comfortable enough for what you have contributed to the ummah, you’re actually welcoming the ‘Islamic wannabe’, who covered their actual figure behind the name of Islamic movements, with their own strategies in order to liberalize other Muslims with their own Islamic understandings and teachings by using the power of brain without thinking that it is also a precious gift given by Allah!
